چکیده

Between 1998 and 2004 approximately 400,000 people died in Germany from cardiovascular disease, with heart valve disease playing a significant role. Heart valve disease can lead to stenoses or insufficiency. In 2006, heart valve operations nationwide increased to 20,000. The implantation of heart valves demands great skill and experience of the heart surgeon. To date, location of implantation was selected so to provide best possible perfusion of the coronary arteries. Currently, no suitable tool has been available for the clinician to appreciate efficiency of implantation pre-operative.

A patient-specific study of blood flow in a cerebral aneurysm using medical images

Background: Cerebral aneurysm disease causes intracranial hemorrhage by rupturing, which can eventually, lead to organ failure or death. For this reason, it is important to anticipate the reasons for rupturing of a cerebral aneurysm from biomechanical point of view. Investigating this disease may even help the physicians to find treatments and predict the patient’s situation. This research was ...

Three Different Imaging Modalities of a Patient with the Aortic Coarctation

The patient was a 19 year-old woman with the diagnosis of resistant hypertension, although she was under treatment of three classes of anti-hypertensive drugs (beta blocker, angiotensin receptor blocker, diuretic) for more than one year. In physical examination there was only a significant difference between the systolic blood pressure of upper and lower extremities (200 vs. 120 mmHg), without ...

Blood Flow Simulation in an Aorta with a mild coarctation Using Magnetic Resonance Angiography and Finite Volume Method

Coarctation of the aorta is one of the five main congenital cardiovascular failures, accounting for 6–8 percent of these failures. This research aimed to simulate the blood flow of a seventeen-year-old male teen with a mild coarctation at one-third of his aorta's descending branch. The simulation was performed by extracting the domain and the input pulsatile velocity signal as the boundary cond...

Investigating the Impact of Knee Prosthesis in Patients’ Body on Radiation Dose Distribution: A Monte Carlo Approach

Introduction: Metal prostheses in patients affect the radiotherapy dose distribution. Metal prostheses with high density and atomic number cause major changes in scattering and attenuation of radiation. The present study aims to assess the impact of metal knee prosthesis with various dimensions and materials on radiotherapy dose distribution. Material and Methods: In this research, the Varian L...

Numerical Simulations of Aortic Blood Flow with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve

Numerical Simulations of Aortic Blood Flow with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve By Ruth D. Blum One of the most common congenital heart defects is bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), occurring in about 1% to 2% of the population. In patients with BAV the aortic valve deviates from normal in that it only has two leaflets instead of three. BAV can result in altered hemodynamics and decreased performance of the ...
